During this current pandemic, many of you have been laid off and for most companies, hiring has come to a halt. BUT, there are a lot of job openings right now, for both essential in-person jobs and remote, work from home jobs.
We all need to make money and this is NOT the time to feel ashamed of having to take a job delivering groceries or working as a call center rep from home to make ends meet. We are all in the same boat.
Here is my updated list of companies hiring right now:
Fully Remote Companies
Flexjobs.com has put together a list of companies that are mostly remote, and I've sorted through them and inserted direct links to the companies' career pages in the list below:
- Evolving Wisdom
- Greenback Expat Tax Services
- Simple [A]
- Time Doctor
- Working Solutions
You can find remote jobs at many companies by searching your favorite job board site for the following terms:
- Remote work
- Telecommuting / Telecommute
- Work from home / Work at home
- Anywhere job
- Virtual job
- Online job
- Off-site job
- Distributed team
Be sure to watch out for work-from-home scams, which are incredibly popular: for every legitimate remote job posted, there are at least 60 fake jobs listed!
You can learn how to avoid work-from-home job scams here.
And if you don't want to take any chances, sign up and search for jobs on FlexJobs: they fully vet all of their job postings by a real human and claim that they are 100% scam-free.
Accessing the website’s job listings does require a membership fee, which can be purchased on a weekly, monthly or yearly basis. FlexJobs is currently offering a discount on its membership prices up to 50% off by using the code JOB at checkout, valid now through April 30.
CVS is hiring an additional 50,000 workers, from retail workers to Human Resources.
Don't forget about Walgreens and other small pharmacies in your area who may also be hiring.
Remote Teaching / Freelance Work
Teachers all over the world are now out of work, and while many are teaching their students remotely, others may find themselves with some extra time on their hands. You can make money teaching students all over the world on sites such as Outschool. Many teachers absolutely love this because you can create your OWN curriculum, on your OWN schedule, teach only what you love, and be your own boss (with no one telling you what and how to teach).
And parents, if your kids are out of school and driving you absolutely nuts, you can also sign up for classes for ANY age here.
There are a TON of remote teaching opportunities right now (just do a quick Google search for "remote teaching jobs"), including:
- UpWork (you can sell ANY of your services here, not just teaching, no matter what your talent!)
Amazon announced that they are hiring an additional 100,000 workers to keep up with demand during this time, and that they would increase their hourly rate from $15 to $17 until the end of April.
And no resume or previous work experience required for many of the jobs!
Walmart will be hiring an additional 150,000 workers and that includes their Sam's Clubs stores. Aside from the obvious retail and Distribution Centers & Driver jobs, there are also jobs available in Corporate, Technology, and Healthcare.
(There is an easy to miss menu bar across the page with each job category listed).
Target and other retail stores that sell groceries will probably remain open, so keep those in mind and check out the websites of stores near you. Search job openings at Target here.
Become a personal grocery shopper and deliver groceries to those in need locally. Instacart is adding 300,000 shoppers during this time and is a great opportunity to make some quick money and get out of the house if you can and are not at heightened risk.
This one's obvious, but store staff is working around the clock to keep up with demand and they're hiring like crazy. If you need cash to get you through this tough time, regardless of how high up your prior job was, sometimes you have to do what you need to do in the interim to make ends meet.
Check out the websites of grocery stores in your area.
According to Glassdoor.com, job openings for certain job types have exploded since the Coronavirus outbreak, including:
- Registered Nurses
- Communications Associate
- Social Worker
- Project Manager
Included in some of these categories are call center aides and other work from home jobs, so don't dismiss this category if your previous job was not in healthcare!
Remote Meeting & Communications Companies
If you're still lucky enough to be working, you're doing so remotely with special software, and these companies are ramping up hiring:
Trying to work from home with children around is nearly impossible. The demand for in-home caregivers during this time is increasing, and Care.com is highly trusted and a great place to offer your child-sitting services.
I can't stress this enough: there is NO SHAME in taking whatever job you can to survive financially these next few months. And don't delay - start applying to jobs NOW before everyone else does.
